How a Maltese Comedian's Satire Sparked a Landmark Case on Free Expression
In March 2023, Maltese comedian Daniel Xuereb performed a stand-up routine in which he satirically referred to Pastor Gordon Manché as "Malta’s biggest asshole" and echoed a previous joke about "carpet bombing" certain pastors. Manché filed a police report, leading to Xuereb being charged with insulting and threatening the pastor, as well as misusing electronic communications equipment by sharing the performance online.
This inspired Daniel to found Wild Comedy, and organize a number of events in protest. On May 16, 2024, the Court acquitted Xuereb of all charges, determining that the comments were part of artistic expression and did not constitute credible threats. The case sparked discussions in Malta about the boundaries of satire and freedom of expression, prompting legislative changes to better protect artistic and comedic speech.
